Brisbane: Eclectic and Underrated

Updated: Mar 11

Brisbane and I go a while back. It was my first in many things in Australia.

My first Australian City, my first time staying at a back packer's place with a bar/night club in the basement, my first time driving a car on the wrong side of the road, my first purple rain under the blossoming Jacaranda trees...

I was never a fan on big cities, but Brisbane stole my heart and made me fall in love with Australia.

I’ve found Brisbane to be a treasure trove of unforgettable experiences. The city itself has the best jogging loop, with the main bridges and the Southbank parks. It has a free outdoor pool that rivals any 5star resort pools, just there for everyone to use!

There are hip bars and fine restaurants, breweries, museums. All the nice places.

Its a not so long train ride away from Surfers Paradise (talking mile long beaches and Adventure parks) and bunch of islands.

Its impossible to write down every place there is to go, I would recommend discovering it yourself. But for the impatient here a small collection:

Cultural and Artistic Explorations:

Institute of Modern Art (IMA): I stumbled upon IMA one weekend, and it’s been one of my favorite art spaces ever since. The exhibitions are always innovative and make you think. If you love contemporary art, this is a must.

Brisbane Powerhouse: I’ve lost track of how many performances and festivals I’ve seen at the Powerhouse. There’s always something going on, from quirky theater shows to vibrant festivals. Check their calendar, and I promise you’ll find something fun.

Green Escapes:

City Botanic Gardens: When I need a quiet moment, I head to the City Botanic Gardens. It’s like stepping into a little green oasis in the middle of the city. Perfect for a picnic or just a peaceful stroll surrounded by lush plants.

Mount Coot-tha: Hiking up Mount Coot-tha is a bit of a workout, but trust me, the view from the top is so worth it. Plus, the Botanic Gardens at the base are a great spot to explore afterward. I could spend hours wandering through them.

Hidden Laneway Bars:

Savile Row: This one feels like a secret. It’s tucked away in an alley, and when you step inside, it’s like entering another world. The cocktails are bespoke and crafted with care—one of my favorite hidden spots for a night out.

Brooklyn Standard: For live music and a lively atmosphere, Brooklyn Standard is where it’s at. I’ve spent countless nights here enjoying craft beers and dancing to live bands—it’s such a fun spot right in the city.

Winghaus: Not so hidden away, but it has good beer on tap and bucketload chicken wings! Our Favorite!

Nature-Filled Day Trips:

Moreton Island: Just a ferry ride away, Moreton Island is the go-to escape when you need a break from city life. Snorkeled with vibrant fish, sand board down dunes or have a magical encounter with wild dolphins.

Lamington National Park: If you’re craving a nature-filled adventure, a drive to Lamington National Park is perfect. I’ve explored ancient rainforests, hiked to waterfalls, and spotted wildlife—it’s an absolute paradise.

Brisbane truly has a little bit of everything for those who want to explore beyond the usual tourist spots. Whether it’s hidden bars, eco-conscious eateries, or breathtaking nature escapes, this city has a way of working its magic on you. So, embrace the adventure, savor the sustainability, and let Brisbane charm you like it did me!
